Esther, excellent piece. Apparently, Wolfe doesn't know history that well. First, until about 150 years ago, marriage was more of a business transaction to collaborate on scarce resources than a union based on romantic love or religious piety. Second, for centuries, high mortality rates and longevity rates that remained low for hundreds of years, meant that parents died frequently and while young, often leaving children with one parent or too often, none. Further, gay couples form longer unions and when married divorced at much lower rates than heterosexual couples. We all know how divorce can impact children. Finally, a massive study in 2018 found that students of gay couples performed 15% better in elementary and secondary education testing and GPA performance.
