In this week’s episode of Freakonomics M.D., the newest podcast in the Freakonomics Radio Network, host Dr. Bapu Jena asks the question: “How Can You Choose the Best Doctor?”

We often select doctors based on their reputations or on misconceptions about what really matters, the Harvard physician and economist explains. But research indicates there might be a better way. Dr. Jena explains some studies he’s done himself, and speaks with other experts in the field.

“Sometimes the traits people prize as the hallmarks of a good doctor — the training program, years of experience, where they’re from — do matter,” he says. “But sometimes those assumptions are wrong.”
